The best diet for the heart is currently a diet that is rich in beans, seeds, nuts, legumes, leafy greens, fresh vegetables and fruit, low in dairy, red meats and consuming fats from olive oil as a good way to keep cholesterol levels down and arteries flowing freely. This diet has been named the Mediterranean diet and now has been shown that it may also be the best diet for the brain.
A review by Hardman and colleagues of all the papers produced on diet and brain health between 2000 and 2015 investigated 135 papers and they concluded that the Mediterranean diet provided positive effects on cognition including attention, memory and language.
These findings show improved brain function through consuming the Mediterranean diet and may also help people with neurodegenerative diseases.
