What You Get in the Food Sensitivity Test

0 Comments

At GC Biosciences we believe that the food sensitivity test we use with our clients is, so far, the strongest researched food sensitivity test out there. This particular methodology has shown in two separate studies to be useful in helping people who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome and irritable bowel disease. That is why we use it with our clients and we use to great effect. However, the test is only one part of the service we offer, but before we get into what we offer in addition to the test lets go over the difference between food allergies, sensitivities and intolerances.

What is the difference between a food allergy, sensitivity and intolerance?

Food allergies are mediated through IgE and Basophils and are severe. Nut allergies are a known example of a what an allergy is, in some cases this type of reactions can cause the body to go into anaphylactic shock and would need to be treated with medication. Medical doctors recognise food allergies quickly and can manage them effectively. A food intolerance is where the body can produce enzymes in sufficient amounts to digest a particular food, such as lactose intolerance. This is where the body does not produce the enzyme lactase to break down the sugar found in milk called lactose. A food sensitivity is still mediated through the immune system, like a food allergy, but mediated through other mechanisms or parts of the immune system. For example, it has been proposed that non-celiac gluten sensitivity could be mediated through the innate immune system reacting to gluten instead of the adaptive immune system.

What is celiacs disease?

It is easy to get confused, especially when you also throw celiacs disease in there, which is an autoimmune disease and not an allergy/sensitivity/intolerance. At GC Biosciences we see highly followed social media “experts” get confused between a gluten allergy and an autoimmune disease such as celiac disease. However, there are clear, well-defined differences between the different names. For clarity, the IgG4 is a food sensitivity test.

What do you get with our food sensitivity test?

Once your blood has been analysed for reactions, the GC Biosciences nutritionist will create your three part program. The first part of the program is to remove the reactive foods in the omission phase. We eliminate the foods for 60 days, because IgG4 antibodies have a half-life of 23 days, so for complete removal from the body, we multiply 23 days by 2 and then add another 14 days to be safe. This is the phase clients are most likely to see improvements in symptoms. Below is a screenshot of one of our food sensitivity reports;

The next phase of the program is the reintroduction phase. This is where foods found to be reactive are added back to the diet every other day starting with the least reactive foods. The reintroduction phase has two benefits, (1) by monitoring symptoms one can conclude which foods are still reactive and continue to omit them, (2) before retesting the reactive foods are introduced to the immune system to prevent false negatives in the retest by “priming the immune cells”.

The final phase is the maintenance phase, where the foods found not to be reactive are placed in the diet by food families i.e. nightshade family of foods stay together and then divided into three different days. This is done in the hopes of preventing new food sensitivities occurring. Below is a screenshot of one of our rotational diets;
