Preventing obesity and related heart disease, liver disease and diabetes by the intake of citrus fruits

Introduction

Citrus fruits are important for holding a number of vital vitamins and minerals including antioxidants such as vitamin C. Some of the most common types are oranges, lemon’s and limes. Obesity is becoming a worldwide problem and the simple citrus fruit could help reduce some of the health consequences of obesity.

The Science

It has now been found in a recent research study that these fruits may help to protect against some of the bad effects of a western diet. A study at the Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) treated 50 mice with flavanones, which are a type of flavonoid found in citrus fruits and give them their colour along with fulfilling many other functions including protection and anti-inflammation. The mice were fed on either a normal diet, high-fat diet or a high-fat diet plus the flavanones for one month. The high-fat diet without the intake of flavanones increased cell damage by 80% in the blood and over 50% in the liver compared to a normal diet. However, when consuming the high fat diet plus the flavanones, these numbers were decreased by 50% in the blood and liver.

Conclusion

This shows that just by increasing the intake of citrus fruits, which contain the flavanones, the mice became healthier, had a decreased oxidative stress and liver damage, lower blood lipids and glucose. Interestingly, even though the mice did not lose weight, they became healthier, which shows a positive effects for people consuming a high fat diet but not overweight.
